Abstract:

This investigation discusses the findings on analysis results of a pavement structure constructed on a relatively expansive material consisting mainly of brown clayey silt in Tebessa, Algeria. Cores were brought to the laboratory from a piece of roadwork. Remolded samples were taken from subgrade of a deteriorated road. The soils were generally found to be of medium plasticity and of a medium to high expansion potential. Oedometer test for free swell indicated a constant volume pressure that produced stress in excess of 350 kN/m2. The following involves describing the behavioral characteristics of expansive soil as it relates to flexible pavements. Soils are generally classified using the X-ray diffraction [XRD]. Computer code Plaxis 8.2 was used for numerical simulation to check the behavior of structure pavement with three models in pavement structure, and free expansion test was performed to calibrate the soil subgrade with Soft-Soil model. The study is based upon simulating the vertical subgrade soil displacement during traffic load, and its influence on load-settlement on flexible pavement behavior. To stabilize the swelling character of subgrade, an adequate surcharge pressure is used according to the procedure described in the article.

Artificial Neural Network Based Backcalculation of Conventional Flexible Pavements on Lime Stabilized Soils

Conventional flexible pavements built on lime stabilized soils (CFP-LSS) were studied for the backcalculation of pavement layer moduli from nondestructive Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing. The validated ILLI-PAVE finite element program was used in pavement structural analyses by taking into account the effects of nonlinear layer modulus behavior, i.e., stress hardening for granular ma...

Chemical Amelioration of Expansive Soils

Expansive soils swell when they absorb water and shrink when water evaporates from them. Hence, lightly loaded civil engineering structures founded in these soils are subjected to severe distress. Therefore, there is a need to ameliorate or improve these swelling soils through some innovative methods. This paper discusses chemical stabilisation of expansive soils, a technique in which chemical ...

Numerical Solution for Heave of Expansive Soils

A numerical solution for heave prediction is developed within the context theories for both saturated and unsaturated soil behaviors. Basically, lowering the potential level of compressing on a saturated layer will cause heaving due to water absorption. This water absorption is in an opposite way, similar to water dissipation as what happens during unloading in consolidation process. However, i...

Expansive Soils—problems and Remedies

Expansive soils are one of the examples of tropical soils. These soils pose problems to civil engineers in general and to geotechnical engineers in particular. They cause damage to structures founded in them because of their potential to react to changes in moisture regime. They undergo severe volume changes corresponding to changes in moisture content. Because of their potential to undergo vol...

On Flexible Docking Using Expansive Search

The activity of most drugs is regulated by the binding of one molecule (the ligand) to a pocket of another, usually larger, molecule, which is commonly a protein. This report describes a new approach to creating low-energy structures of flexible proteins to which ligands can be docked. The flexibility of molecules is encoded with thousands of parameters making the search for valid complexes a f...

Nondestructive Dynamic Testing of Soils and Pavements

Non destructive testing techniques based on the application of dynamic loads on the surface of a soil deposit or a pavement system, and the measurement of the resulting deflection basins or the phase difference between the motions recorded at various receivers have become powerful tools in civil engineering. In many cases, however, the interpretation of the recorded data relies on static analys...
